For more than 20 years, the GEARE program has enabled students to take part in exchanges between KIT and Purdue University. You’ll have the chance to complete an internship with leading companies and, along the way, explore the many opportunities this remarkable country has to offer. Whether in the lab, on campus, or traveling beyond, there’s always something new to discover — launch your own adventure here!

Here you can find an example schedule for an exchange to the USA, based on our experiences over the past few years.

Info event and application period. Time to complete and submit your application.
\ December
Individual Interviews & Acceptances.
\ January
Program kickoff! Get to know the other participants and receive your first tips and guidance from us and from IPEK.
\ February – March
Regular exam period at KIT. At the same time, you start searching for an internship position, apply for a passport, and obtain any required language certificates.
\ April
Arrival of guest students from the US and China at KIT. From this point on, several events will help you get to know each other and connect.
\ May
You’ll apply for your visa and also take care of other organizational matters, such as health insurance and enrollment at Purdue University.
\ June – August
Now it’s time for the final preparations. You’ll receive plenty of support and some last tips for your upcoming stay abroad.
\ September
Departure to the US! Your first stop is Chicago, followed by a two-week stay at Purdue University. During this time, you’ll take care of enrollment formalities, open a bank account, and handle many other practical matters before heading to your assigned internship location.
\ September – December
Your internship usually ends in mid-December, leaving you nearly three weeks before the start of the semester at Purdue to explore the country during the winter season.
\ January – May
In mid-January, the Spring Semester at Purdue begins, marking the start of the academic part of your US stay. Alongside lectures, you can look forward to a vibrant campus life, top-tier basketball games, and the nearly legendary Harry’s Chocolate Shop.
\ May
In mid-May, the semester at Purdue University concludes with a compact examination period.
\ May – June
After your visa expires, you’ll have a 30-day grace period during which you can continue to travel freely within the country. The perfect opportunity for an extended road trip across the US!
